Setting up Remote Desktop Connection on HTC HD2

In case you have HTC HD2, or any other Windows Mobile 6.5 phone, you’ve probably always wanted to try the inbuilt Remote Desktop Connection app, called “Remote Desktop Mobile”. In case you have problems connecting, here’s very detailed tutorial. This tool will allow you to see and manage your PC’s screen on your phone!

Before you do anything on your WM cell, you need to enable remote connections on your PC. Right click on the Computer icon, and select ‘Properties’. Now select “Advanced system settings”

And then, go to “Remote” tab, and mark the second option in the Remote Desktop box:

OK, now the second phase: setting up your HD2. First, you need to make sure that your WiFi connection is enabled (in Settings->Wireless Controls). Now, go to Start, open the “Tools” folder, and run “Remote Desktop Mobile”.

You will see the following start screen:

As usually, I will go field by field:

1. Computer – type in the IP address of your PC.

2. User name – this is your user account name on your PC.

3. Password – the password that you use to log in to your PC.

4. Domain – if your computer is a member of a domain, fill in the domain name here.

I recommend you to mark “Save password”. You could click “Connect” right away, but for best results, select “Options”, and you will see the following screen:

It is extremely important to select “High color (16 bit)” in the “Colors” field. Otherwise, image quality will be very low. I like to select the “Full screen” option, and to leave the second option blank, but you can change these setting according to your needs.

One more thing, and we’re done. Click on  the “Resources” tab, and select “Play on this device” in the sound options. This will allow you to listen to your PC music on your phone!

Click “OK”, and then “Connect”, and in a moments time, you should be able to see your PC screen on your mobile phone. Here are some screenshots.

Unfortunately, this app doesn’t work in landscape mode, for unknown reasons… The other problem is that HTC HD2 has capacitive touchscreen, so you cannot use stylus, which makes it quite difficult to click on the icon you want, because they are sooo tiny. Update: this app supports multi-touch, so you can pinch to zoom in/out, and than the size of the icons stops being a problem.

Otherwise, very cool app, hope you enjoy using it.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I’ve also recored a video tutorial regarding this issue. You can watch it on my YouTube channel, or directly here:

Any questions?

    Hi. Highdiver.
Thank you very much for the useful information tutorial.

I have a couple of questions though.

Firstly, I was wondering that, If i connect HTC HD2 to the laptop by remote desktop connection, Would i be able to use it anywhere in the world on the phone?

Secondly, Does remote desktop connection work, when the Laptop is off?

    Thank you.

  1. Hi Jon, thank you for your comment.

I’m not sure what are you asking me in the first question, but I’ll try to answer it: HD2 and laptop have to be on the same WiFi network, unless you are using VPN,

    2. No, the laptop must be turned on.

    Hi.
Oh it needs to be on same network.
So i cannot use it outside home with different wireless network like Apple?

Thank you so much for answering.

  2. not that I know, it may be possible via VPN connection, but don’t take my word on it…

    no problem, that’s why I’m here… 🙂

    Hi All,

I got the same problem as “adidu” and I also runs Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

    I keep Receiving error message:

    Cannot connect. Likely reasons are:
    1. The remote computer is not set up for this
    2. Reached the maximum number of connections.
    3. A network error occurred while connecting

    I’m running Windows 7 with a Dlink DIR-451 Router.

I’ve forwarded port 3389 as instructed, I’ve tried disabling all firewalls.

I have tried the local Ip-adress and my computer Ip-adress, and I have allow conection for remote desktop.

    What am I doing wrong???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  8. I’m sorry, but I don’t have experience with that router. I never mentioned port forwarding, so try reseting the router.

I have already tried, but still no luck at all. I saw some one said you had to log off the computer before you could connect, is that true?

      • no, that’s not truth, your PC will automatically “switch user” (lock your PC) when you connect via phone.

    Hi again,
I’ve tried everything but still no luck at all..it doesn’t want connect to my PC. I also saw the router settings to make sure that i’m not part of a domain.. I’m also sure that my IP address is internal…I tried to connect to my PC when the hd2 is connected via usb exactly like in the tutorial but there isn’t any difference.. it still says :
    “Cannot connect.Likely reasons are:
1.Specified computer name or ip does not exist.
    2. A network error occurred while establishing the connection.”

I’m sure the remote PC settings that i made are correct. I did them just like in the tutorial. Please help !

    • Well, I’m not quite sure I can help you, maybe you should try with your friends’ network and PC, just to see where’s the problem.

Hi, I want to connect my HTC HD2 to my Toshiba laptop. I have inserted in my cell phone the laptop’s IP address, I added the username but I have no ideea what I should write under password. Where can I get the password, because I haven’t set up my laptop with any password. I have tried to connect the two devices without a password, I can see my laptop on the cellphone, but when I click on user it asks for my passsword. What can I do>? Please give me a solution….Thank you

    • You need to have a PC password in order to get this working. So, create a password for your PC account, ad everything will be fine…

    Zdravo

    Hvala unaprijed.

Windows Remote Desktop is quite easy to work with it. If you’re remoting to your PC from your HTC HD2 easy way to do is to ping the device(vise versa). If you don’t know how to do this, forget about using Remote Desktop(I’m not being mean, but seriously). Next check the settings on your PC, check your firewall and verify exceptions. In windows remote desktop, you need to add the users/account that is allowed to remote in. I always just use my own account. I know people say “well the Everyone account is added already”. Yeah right but it doesn’t really work that way with windows. I’ve encountered scenarios on which “Everyone” account doesn’t give access to a PC. You can easily check this in Remote desktop settings for this. If you cannot access the options for remote desktop, chances are you don’t have privileged or your windows doesn’t have this feature installed. I hope that helps. Mine works the first time I tried :).

Ok here is a possible solution to the problem for users with Windows 7 64bit Ultimate where HD2 throws Incorrect username password while trying Remote Desktop Connection

I have been trying the user name that i use while logging in.
However that does not work so

Type ‘System Information’ on run/search command on windows 7
You shall see the correct user name you need to use on the right hand panel.

    Good Luck

    Have a good day

Thank you so much for the blog. Im connected and working great. One thing that might help that wasnt quite specified was that both your computer and your phone need to be connected to the same network. Besure you wifi on you phone is actually connected and not just turned on. Also besure u have the right ip entered in i tried the ip and the gateway both until it worked. I cant remeber which on that gave me access

I’ve noticed that many of you are facing same following error:

    I keep Receiving error message:
    Cannot connect. Likely reasons are:
    1. The remote computer is not set up for this
    2. Reached the maximum number of connections.
    3. A network error occurred while connecting

I could solve it after some struggle with setting in windows mobile version 6.5 and windows 7 ultimate.

go through following, it helped me and might help you too.

1.check if remote host is set for permission to remote desktop connections

2.click on the advance tab on the same page and check if the user trying to connect from mobile is added to access list (if not select that user from list).

3.user can not have password field empty.

4.both device need to be in network with proper network ip, example is 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2

5.setup mobile’s ip address in wifi adapter property, mark that there are many adapters for it, you need to choose right one, which your mobile is using to connect to pc. if you don’t know edit all with same ip.

6.create adhoc wifi connection in pc’s network sharing center and same in mobile, while creating select WEP and open encryption in mobile and WEP and AES in pc. give same network key in both connections.

7.now click on connect in both pc and mobile wifi connections and check if you can establish connection. if it says connected, they are in LAN.(if not, go to command prompt and check if ip is correct by ipconfig command)

8.now disable firewall. also anti virus permanently if there is any.

    9.restart both mobile and pc.

10.make LAN connection again by clicking connect on both device.

11.go to remote desktop application in mobile, and make settings same as described above.enter password most carefully because you will keep looking for other things but not password once you missed it.

12.click on connect and it should work now. if not, check out other things and if you can fix it, post it here.
